New video: NARAL Pro-Choice America and the “forward flank” of the movement

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue visited CREDO’s office on Oct. 7 to talk about the future of the pro-choice movement and thank CREDO and our members for our longstanding partnership.

NARAL, as Hogue described, is the “forward flank” of the pro-choice movement, aggressively fighting against efforts to restrict women’s right to access the healthcare of their choosing. NARAL calls itself the “forward flank,” rather than “left flank,” because pro-choice Americans are the majority: 70 to 80 percent of Americans support pro-choice values. There’s a common misconception that the country is divided on this issue, but the majority of Americans are in support of women having legal access to abortion and being able to make decisions about their bodies and their families without the intervention of politicians.

This is not a simple fight about reproductive rights. It’s a fight against misogyny and sexism. “Abortion rights is the tip of the spear of a much larger conversation about patriarchy,” Hogue said. It’s also a fight about economic equality. Access to abortion is not just a medical issue, at its core it is also an economic one. Abortion restrictions perpetuate inequality through their disproportionate impact on low-income women.

CREDO will continue to play a major role in the fight for reproductive freedom, in partnership with NARAL and other groups. “No matter what happens in this election, you can expect that we’ll be the forward flank,” said Hogue. “We are so thrilled to be doing it with your support and partnership.”
